The Importance of Business Cards

Business cards are an important form of advertising for any business.  Small and convenient, they are one of the best forms of advertising available.  They are easy to distribute yourself by tucking into books, magazines, and brochures.  You might leave a small stack of them in the local laundry mat, theater or grocery store.  They can be tacked up on bulletin boards at the post office or library.  Leave a few with friends and family and ask them to hand them out for you.  Pass them out at seminars and business lunches.  Carry a few with you to the ball game and leave them in a conspicuous place.  Simply put, business cards are an economical and easy way to spread the word about your business.

The design possibilities of your business cards are endless.  You can choose a solid background or a patterned design to catch the eye.  Perhaps you prefer a stark white with bold lettering or a more playful color with a fun font design.  Your business cards can also double as appointment cards or a calender.  You might add a bit of whimsy or factual information to the back of your card.  Having a bit of interesting writing on the back often encourages a person to hang onto your card and refer back to it from time to time.  This is important for your business because it keeps you fresh in the recipients mind long after you first meet.  Another fun element that one might add is a small ruler.  A person might hang onto a business card that also doubles as a small ruler for quite some time simply for the convenience.  If they keep the ruler, they also keep your information.

In addition to design, your business cards should also say as much about your business as possible without crowding.  Besides your business name and contact information, perhaps a small line or two about your business and what you do.  Maybe a clever tagline that someone will find amusing or easy to remember.  Don’t be shy about expressing yourself through your card.  Your business cards are going to be the first thing someone notices about you, so take some time to make it the best first impression you can.
